Summer is here! And among other things, I especially find this to be a great time for reading. Reading has shaped my life and my career and my relationship to the world – especially the reading of non-fiction books. Because of this, and as a mini celebration of the book I just published, I thought it would be a great time to share some of the books that have inspired some of my greatest decisions. These are books that will change the way you think, and make you a better dater along the way.

1. Tiny Beautiful Things, by Cheryl Strayed

This seemingly simple book is packed with pearls of wisdom, chilling stories, and emotional connections to humanity. If you are looking for a book that will help boost your levels of empathy and spark an understanding for what others are going through, this is going to be your ultimate summer read.

2. The 48 Laws of Power, by Robert Greene

One of my all-time favorite books, The 48 Laws of Power is a heated, savage, and yet necessary guide to gaining power in the world. It has sparked much controversy. But I’d say that it’s worth a read for that reason alone. Robert Greene has taken thrilling and true examples from human history as a way of explaining the necessary steps one should take if one is in the pursuit of power. And the best part? This is relevant for both career and relationships.

3. The Lover’s Dictionary, by David Levithan

If what you’re in need of is some good and genuine inspiration on love and hope for the future, The Lover’s Dictionary is going to be a great place to start. By portraying elements of his love life as a dictionary, David Levithan will open your eyes to the beauty, power, and complications of love.

4. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo

Before you get confused as to why I’m including a book on clutter in the mix, I have to say that this has been one of the most influential books in my own life. By taking control of your surroundings and creating an inspiring space around you, you will be allowing yourself to move forward in multiple areas, including relationships, career, health, and love.

5. The Charisma Myth, by Olivia Fox Cabane

This is one of those books that may require a second or third reading (or at least some good note taking), as it is that jam-packed with valuable information. It’s tempting to think that charisma is genetic, something people are born with. But charisma can be learned. And Olivia Fox Cabane breaks that down in a fascinating way. Needless to say, this is probably one of my highest recommendations on the list!

6. Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor E. Frankl

Man’s Search for Meaning provides some seriously deep reflections and insight on life and its meaning. Beautifully written, shockingly vulnerable, and beyond words, this is without a doubt a book that will change the way you think about nearly everything.

7. As a Man Thinketh, by James Allen

This book may be short, but it’s also filled with wisdom. This list would not be complete without As a Man Thinketh, as the main intention of the book is to change the way you live through the power of thought.

8. The Dating Epiphany, by Stacy Karyn

So, there is of course no way that I can not share my own newly-released book on dating in the list! I wrote this book after helping nearly 1500 singles with their dating journeys. The Dating Epiphany was inspired by my clients, conversations, relationships, and personal failures and successes in regards to dating. And my findings? Well let’s just say that the answer is simpler than you may think.

Know of any other books that will change the way you think?

Feel free to share in the comments below! I’m so glad that I finally was able to share these amazing books with you all on this happy summery day. They have all had such a huge impact on my life, and I’m sure that they will make big changes in yours as well. In the meantime, I’m continuing to read like crazy. And once I have a handful of new books that are just as inspiring, I’ll make sure to share those with you as well.

And for now, happy summer! Enjoy your moments of reading in the sunshine. 🙂

Until next time,

  1. From the chapter titles and online descriptions, 48 Laws looks like a terrible, toxic book. One of the keys to happiness is to be yourself. If you can handle cerebral books, I recommend Quantum and the Lotus. For easier reading yet still great books, look at anything written by Malcolm Gladwell.
